President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government has been called upon to prevail on Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, to show human kindness to the plight of teeming pensioners in the state.
The plea was made by Good Governance Support Group, GGSG, an Osun state-based non-governmental organisation that promotes the welfare of pensioners. The group bemoaned the, payment of half pension for the month of November 2014 to the state retirees out of eight months unpaid pensions being owed.
In a statement issued in Osogbo yesterday and jointly signed
by the Group’s Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Oyeleke and Secretary, Mr. Sola Olojede, the association described the action of Governor Aregbesola as demonstration of outright callousness and a practical confirmation of the contempt and disrespect for the continued survival of the retirees in the state.
The statement further said that the payment of half pension to the pensioners is unprecedented in the history of not only the state but also the defunct Western Region.
It added that the action of the governor has no respect for old age and does not encourage those still in service to be dedicated and look forward gracefully to their retirement.
The group then advised Aregbesola to rediscover himself and take immediate steps to settle all pension arrears of retirees in the state.
“In the alternative, we reiterate our earlier call on the FG to declare a state of emergency in Osun State to enable it take over direct administration of the state and clear the huge mess resulting in life threatening condition which Aregbesola himself has said is beyond his control”, the group stated.
