Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, yesterday condemned the gruesome assassination of Comrade Sylvanus Otueneh, a staff of the national secretary general of the IYC, Comrade Bristol Emmanuel Alagbariya, in his private residence in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in the late hours of Friday.
According to a statement issued by the IYC spokesman, Comrade Eric Omare, “We strongly believe that the national secretary general of the IYC, Comrade Bristol Emmanuel Alagbariya was the prime target of the assassins and only went for the late Sylvanus when they could not find Comrade Alagbariya within the premises. This act is barbaric and most condemnable.
The IYC also commiserated with the family of the later Otueneh and the IYC national secretary, for the irreparable loss.
They called on the Inspector General of Police and heads of other security agencies to properly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice for this gruesome act.
Meanwhile, he urged IYC members, especially those in the eastern zone of the IYC, to remain calm while the security agencies carry out a detail investigation and unravel those behind the dastardly act.
He, however, said “it is important to state clearly for the benefit of the public that contrary to the wrong impression that the gunmen invaded the IYC national secretariat, the unfortunate incident happened in the private residence of the IYC national secretary in Port Harcourt where a private meeting was taking place.
“The IYC secretariat is at Izon House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and the meeting that was said to be ongoing at the time of the attack was not an IYC meeting.”
