Construction giants, Julius Berger Nigeria, JBN PLC hosted a writing workshop for students of Government day secondary school, Bwari and donated 600 books of various subjects to the school’s library.
The gesture, which is part of the firm’s corporate social responsibility to create educational progress in Nigerian schools, is also to commemorate the World Poetry Day.
Over 5000 copies of the book, “The Great Fall” by Nigerian author Chinyere Obi-Obasi, has been distributed to schools across Abuja, Lagos and Uyo since 2012 when JBN launched the programme and “Berger Books Clubs.”
Highlight of the presentation at Government Day Secondary School was a poetry workshop where renowned Nigerian poet, Dike Chukwumerije, author of eight books and the winner of several performance poetry competitions, led students in the senior secondary school class, SSS 1-3 into literary works, reading works of Nigerian poets, and learning how to write their own poems using poetic literary devices.
According to the CSR team, the aim is designed to help promote the advancement of literacy within the Nigerian secondary school system.
It is also aimed at reducing illiteracy level in the country following United Nations statistics, listing youths’ literacy rate in Nigeria of 75.6 per cent males and 58 per cent females.
