Chairman, Independent National Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, would next week Tuesday, June 30 bow out as head of the electoral umpire following the expiration of his five-year term.
Jega will leave the commission with six other national commissioners, whose tenure has also expired.
Nigerian Pilot learnt that the affected national commissioners include Col. M.K. Hammanga (rtd), Dr Ishmael Jikiri Igbani, Rivers state, Prof. Lai Olurode, Osun state, Dame Gladys Nne Nwafor, Mrs Thelma Amata Iremiren, and Engr. Dr. Nuru A. Yakubu.
It would be recalled that Jega and his colleagues were inaugurated by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on June 30, 2010.
Four other national commissioners, Dr. Abdulkadir S. Oniyangi and Mrs. Amina Bala Zakari, will bow out July 21, 2015, while Dr. Chris O. Iyimoga, and Amb. (Dr.) Mohammed Ahmad Wali’s five year tenure expires on August 11, 2015.
Already, 16 Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs had left the Commission last week and were held to a gala night, Thursday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital.
They are; Ahmad Makama, Haliru A. Tambuwal, Abdullahi Umar Danyaya, Abubakar U.G. Wara, Mr. Mike Igini, Prof. Selina Omagha Oko, Hussaini Ahmed Mahuta, Dr. A.L. Ogunmola, Alhaji Ibrahim Zarewa, Prof. Tukur Sa’ad, Dr. Emmanuel Onucheyo, Kassim Gana Gaidam, Mr. Timothy Ibitoye, Amb. Dr. Rufus Akeju, Prof. C.E. Onukaogu, and Ibrahim Bagobiri Marafa.
Meanwhile, Jega had said he would not seek
re-appointment after finishing his first tenure, he hails from Kebbi State.
