Jelani Aliyu is the Director General of the Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC). He served as Lead Exterior Designer at General Motors in the United States of America. He designed the globally renowned electric car, the Chevrolet Volt.

Jelani Aliyu is the fifth of the seven children of Alhaji Aliya Haidara and Sharifiya Hauwa-Aliyu from Sokoto State, Nigeria. He was born in 1966, into a very close-knit family and he had an amazing experience while growing up in Sokoto.

He attended Capital School, Sokoto from 1971 to 1978. In 1978, he gained admission into Federal Government College, Sokoto, where he graduated with an award of best in Technical Drawing.

He then proceeded to the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in order to study Architecture but he later dropped out and registered at the Birnin Kebbi Polytechnic, where he finally concluded his study in Architecture.

At the Birnin Kebbi Polytechnic, Hauwa-Aliyu was again awarded the best all-round student at graduation.

In 1990, Aliyu went to the College for Creative Studies in Detroit where he studied Transportation Design. This study was made possible by a scholarship from the Sokoto State Government.

After graduation, he was immediately noticed by an American multinational corporation that designs and markets vehicles, General Motors.

GM vehicles are sold under various brands such as, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Holden and many more.

He began his career as a design staff at General Motors in 1994 and he worked with GM until his appointment as Director General, Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) by Ngerian government.

Jelani Aliyu is considered by many as the super star of the General Motors renaissance.

He co-designed the Buick Rendezvous and was the lead exterior designer of the Pontiac G6 and he also worked on the Astra with General Motors’ Opel Division.

Aliyu invented the Chevrolet Volt, a battery-powered, extended range passenger vehicle which was described as General Motors’ most electrifying advanced technologic vehicle.”

The Chevrolet Volt has an electric generator powered by an internal combustion engine with the capacity of 62 kW. It has a fuel tank capacity of 45 liters. The fuel tank combined with the battery charge gives it enough to run for 640 miles.

In 2014, Jelani’s invention ‘the Chevrolet Volt’ was given an award by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the market.

Mr. Jelani Aliyu was appointed as the Director-General of Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC). His appointment, by President Muhammadu Buhari was very timely in that it came at a time when the Federal Government banned importation of vehicles through the land borders but only through the sea ports.
