President Goodluck Jonathan and security agencies have been asked to review the appointment of the rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, Dr. Shettima Saidu Abdulkadir, for allegedly not being in line with due process.
In a petition to the president and security agencies entitled ‘Criminal Appointment of Dr. Shettima Saidu Abdulkadir as Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, by Use of Fake Note and Signature of Mr. President’ filed by Shaibu Ommameh Madaki of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, he claimed that the appointment of Abdulkadir violated the procedure of appointing the occupant of the office.
According to him, Section 7 of the Federal Polytechnic Amended Decree 1993 empowers only the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to appoint any one into the position of the rector; but Shettima’s appointment did not follow the process.
Citing an examination conducted for contestants for the post of rector of the institution among the three names that made it, Madaki said he was the first, stressing that the records were there to prove the point. He said that Shettima emerged as rector in a most suspicious manner.
The petition was also copied to the director, State Security Service, SSS, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Inspector-General of Police, IGP, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, and the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, which gave a background to the change of guard at the institution.
According to him, “…I was employed by the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, in October, 1992. In my academic career, I grew through the ranks to the position of deputy rector and finally the acting rector of the institution on the 3rd of February, 2014. The rectorship position was advertised and upon fulfilling the requirements, I came first in the interview conducted by the Governing Council on the 24th November, 2013.
“On the expiration of the tenure of the last rector on February 2nd, 2014, while awaiting the selection and appointment of a substantive Rector by Your Excellency, the Governing Council in her wisdom appointed me the Acting Rector on the 3rd of February, 2014.”
However, Madaki said while he was away outside the institution on official assignment a fortnight after, “one Dr. Shettima Abdulkadir came with a letter claiming that it was from the permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education asking the Governing Council to write a letter of appointment to him as rector.
“This Shettima has been a provost of Federal College of Education, Potiskum, eight years in the same Federal Ministry of Education. If he is allowed to complete four years or eight years as rector as he currently claims he is, he would have spent a minimum of 12 years and a maximum of 16 years as a head of federal government institutions in one ministry.”
Efforts to get reactions from Shettima on phone on the issue proved abortive at press time, as his number indicated it was out of coverage area.
