An Abuja based journalist with the SubNews Magazine, Tony Christian has petitioned the Inspector General of Police over an alleged use of the police to harass and intimidate him by the managing director of Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, NEPZA, over the magazine’s investigation into an alleged involvement of the MD in a N500million contract scam.
In the petition, which was made available to journalists, Mr. Christian said he was arrested on October 2, 2015, on the orders of the MD in order to suppress the investigation into his alleged misappropriation of the internally generated revenue collected from General Electric by the agency.
“While I am demanding a written apology over my arrest on October 2, 2015, by the agency in the course of discharging my constitutional duty as journalist, I wish to bring to your notice an alleged standing order issued by the MD to arrest and detain any staff of SubNews who is found in or around the premises of NEPZA,” a part of the petition reads.
Mr Christian, however, applauded the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Maitama Police Division, Abuja, where he was taken upon arrest for exhibiting what he called “high level of professionalism” in refusing to succumb to a premeditated attempt by the MD and his acolytes to use their positions to suppress the media.
