jtfMen of the Joint Task Force in Rivers State has arrested about five persons in connection to illegal possession of arms.
Nigerian Pilot Saturday gathered that the suspects were arrested during a gun battle between the thugs and the suspects at Rumueme area in Obio/Akpor local government area of the state.
Nigerian Pilot Saturday further gathered that two of the suspects died during the gun duel.
According to a source who spoke to this daily, the JTF also recovered three AK-47 riffles, ammunitions and assorted Indian hemp during the arrest. It was further gathered that those arrested were suspected to be hired thugs while the arms and ammunition were to be used to unleash violence on voters and innocent citizens before or during the gubernatorial elections on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Rivers State governor, Rt. Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has commended the men of the JTf for the arrest.
Amaechi, in a statement in Port Harcourt signed by his Chief Press Secretary, David Iyofor, hailed the security agencies over the arrest.
He urged voters and the people of Rivers State to remain calm and peaceful as the Joint security in the state has assured that they were poised to ensure a peaceful, violence free elections as well as the safety of lives and properties before, during and after the elections.
