The Joint Task Force, JTF, has commenced a security initiative code named “Operation Clean Sweep” aimed at discouraging incessant attacks and Kidnapping of innocent citizens by armed criminal groups including pirates and militants in Akwa Ibom.

According to the Commander of NNS Jubilee, Commodore David Adeniran at a press briefing in Ikot Abasi yesterday the operation began last weekend with raids on some suspected hideouts including islands in Eastern Obolo and Ibeno areas of the state.

Adeniran said that the operation was to dislodge armed criminals and restore normal activities in the maritime area of the state and involved personnel from NNS Jubilee, Forward Operating Base in Ibaka, 6 Battalion in Ibagwa and the Department of State Service.

He said that intelligence reports indicated that most pirate attacks and other forms of criminal activities in the coastal areas were initiated from these camps
