On July 29, 1966, a group of Northern officers who revolted against the government storm the Government house Ibadan where the then head of state, General J.T.U Aguiyi Ironsi was staying with his host, military governor of the defunct western region, Lt. Col Adekunle Fajuyi. They were arrested and killed. The northern army did this as a revenge of the January 15, 1966 coup which led to the death of top northern military officers and politicians.
The military coup was organized and executed by major-generals Theophelus Danjuma, Murtala Muhammed and other northern extracts. After the death of General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi, Gen. Yakubu Gowon took over as the head of state.
