The President Court of Appeal Hon. Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa CFR today turns 66 years old.
She is the amiable daughter of Alhaji Abubakar Gidado El-Nafaty and Hajiya Aishatu Dudu El-Nafaty; she was born on 6th March 1950 in Bauchi, Bauchi State.
An indigene of Nafada Local Government Area of Gombe State, the President Court of Appeal attended Tudun Wada Primary School Kaduna from 1957 to 1960 obtaining her School leaving Certificate in 1963 from Senior Primary School, Maiduguri Road.
Hon Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa thereafter attended Queen Elizabeth School, Ilorin where she obtained the West African School Certificate in 1968. She married the late Prof. Abubakar Yaya Aliyu in 1969; the marriage is blessed with 6 children.
Having taken care of the home front, the Hon. PCA continued with her academic pursuit, attending Abdullahi Bayero Collage of the Ahmadu Bello University, Kano between 1971 and 1972 and obtained GCE A levels.
Armed with these certificates, Hon. Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa proceeded to study Law at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria graduating with Honours in 1975; thereafter to the Nigerian Law School Lagos and was called to the Nigerian Bar on 3rd July 1976.
She served the nation as a National Youth Service Corps member (NYSC) at the Ministry of Justice Kaduna State till July 1977 and was retained after NYSC working as a Pupil State Counsel and a State Counsel 1
This astute Jurist moved to the State Judiciary as a Magistrate I, in 1980 and rose through the ranks; working as Magistrate Grade I, Senior Magistrate Grades I & II and Chief Magistrate Grade II in the Kaduna State Judiciary. It was during this period, that the Hon. PCA attended Yale University, Connecticut, USA as a visiting Scholar for 3 months. In 1986 and 1987, Hon. Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa continued her career in the Bauchi State Judiciary as Chief Magistrate Grade I, Deputy Chief Registrar, as well as Acting Chief Registrar. She was sworn- in as Judge of the Bauchi State High Court in 1987. She lost her husband barely a month after her swearing-in. She married Alhaji Adamu Bulkachuwa in 1991.
At the creation of Gombe State, the Hon. PCA became the First Chief Judge; a position she held from January 1997 to December 1998.
Hon. Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 1998 where she rose through the ranks; serving as Presiding Justice of various Divisions of the Court between 2005 and 2012.
In November 2012, Hon. Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa was appointed Acting President and later confirmed President; reaching her pinnacle of success on 17th April 2014 when she was sworn-in as the first woman in the Legal History of Nigeria to serve as President of the Court of Appeal. She becomes 6th in the linage of Presidents of the Court of Appeal.
This quintessential Legal icon is a recipient of two National Honours namely, Officer of the Federal Republic OFR in 2008 and Commander of the Federal Republic CFR in 2014.
