Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said all is set to conduct rerun election to fill the vacant seat of Lere West constituency at the Kaduna State House of Assembly next Saturday, February 20, 2016.
The state Resident Electoral commissioner, Abdullahi A. Kaugama disclosed this while addressing newsmen shortly after convening a stakeholders meeting with political parties and other stakeholders to ensure hitch free election in the state.
It would be recalled that an election was conducted in Lere West constituency of the state during the 2015 general elections, which was won by an All Progressive Congress, APC candidate, Kabir Mohammed. But the election was nullified by the tribunal on the ground that the Mohammed was not qualified (education qualification) to contest the election.
According to the REC, “We are ready, already we have trained the staffs who are going to conduct the election which normally are the NYSC corps members. They are trained on use of card readers and the conduct of the election in the field in the five local governments.
“We have moved all non sensitive materials to the local governments where the election will take place. What we await now is the sensitive materials such as the results sheets and the ballot papers. We are expecting them to come by Thursday when the political parties will be allowed to inspect them and later convene to where the elections will take place,” he said.
Kaugama urged the political parties to call their supporters to order to accept outcomes of the elections and imbibe spirit of sportsmanship.
Meanwhile, the Kaduna State acting Secretary of APC, Yahaya Baba Pate said, gone are the days ballot boxes are found in the district heads palace, saying it would not tolerate that.
He said the district heads should be custodian of the society urging the district heads to play the game according to the rule and not to be partisan.
“We have a complaint of one particular district head in Lere constituency, we are appealing to them to allow the people vote for the candidates of their choice. We are also sending advice them to be custodian of the society and not to be partisan. They play the game according to the rules,” he said.
Pate however, said the political parties would adhere to the rules of the game.
In his words: “We in APC are prepared for the fresh election and we are optimistic that our new candidate, Bashir Gatari, will emerge winner at the poll.”
However, the state secretary of PDP, Mr. Kabiru Balat said, “all we want is free, fair and credible election because we are not going to tolerate any form of rigging from the APC.”
