KANO State Government, yesterday, donated food items worth N2.5 million to prison inmates to enable them celebrate Eid el-Kabir. The items comprise of three cows, 14 rams, I0 bags of rice, 16 jerry-cans of vegetable oil and other food items. Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, told officials of the Kano Central Prison, Kurmawa, that the gesture was to assist the inmates celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with ease. “It has been the tradition of Governor Abdullah Ganduje to assist inmates during special occasions,” he said. He called on well-to-do individuals in the state to complement government’s efforts by donating food items and other materials to support the inmates. “The state government welcomes and encourages people who are willing to support the inmates in whatever way possible provided they follow the agreed channels,“ he said. The Deputy Controller of Prison, Mr Auwalu Diso, thanked the government for the kind gesture and assured that the items would be judiciously used for the benefit of the inmates. He commended Ganduje for donating rubber mats and mattresses in addition to awarding contract for the construction of drains in the prison. The SSG was accompanied by some members of the State Committee on Prerogative of Mercy. The state government had during Ramadan secured the release of no fewer than 500 inmates.
