Kano State Police Command has paraded two members of a notorious armed robbery syndicate, who are usually clad in military and police camouflage uniforms during operations.
The Command’s spokesman, ASP Musa Magaji Majiya, told journalists that the members of the suspected highway robbery syndicate were apprehended by a crack police squad from the Command while they terrorising travellers on Kano/Zaria and Kano/Maiduguri road.
He disclosed that six members of the dreaded gang are still at large, but assured that the police are on the trail of the fleeing robbers and would do whatever needs be done to apprehend them.
Magaji also said the gangs of armed robbers usually wear army and police camouflage uniform to terrorise motorists, explaining that they often barricaded Kano-Zaria express road, armed with dangerous weapons.
According to Majgaji, the robbers usually stop unsuspecting road users, robber them of the possessions noting that in one case they snatched the sum of $14,900, a Honda Accord, valued at N1.8 million, as well as two iphones’, valued at N340, 000 from a motorist.
It was this incident that prompted the police to swing into action, stressing that their trial of the robbers paid off when on sighting the police, they took to their heels and abandoned the stolen car.
One of the suspects, Magaji said was arrested on the spot, during which he confessed that they are syndicate of four men, armed with three rifles, which they use to terrorize traffic flow on the express way, adding that in their recent operation, they snatched three Volkswagen Golf cars and one Toyota Corolla car.
He disclosed that another four-man gang in which one was arrested, while three others are at large, were also wearing army-like uniforms to operate and attack motorists on the highway, during which a Golf car was snatched, including the sum of N40, 000 belonging to the car owner.
Furthermore, Magaji explained that immediately the police were alerted, they swung into action, chased and engaged them in a gun battle, with one of the robbers shot on the leg and promptly arrested, while the other three fled into the bush.
Items recovered from the robbers, included two long guns, one locally made pistol, eight cartridges, two pairs of army-like uniform, including the stolen Golf car, which was also recovered.
