Director of the Institute of Offshore Technology, University of Port Harcourt, Professor John Okoli who was kidnapped by unknown gunmen last Monday, August 8, 2016, has regained his freedom.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that Okoli, who was kidnapped on his way home, was released Wednesday night.
It was further gathered that Okoli, former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, UNIPORT, was released by his kidnappers who brought him back to his private residence at Omuato-Aluu community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State about 9pm.
It is, however, not clear if ransom was paid for the captors to bring him back.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Omoni Nnamdi confirmed the Okoli’s release, adding that the senior lecturer had already reunited with his family.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command yesterday paraded 41 suspected criminals who were said to be involved in kidnapping, armed robbery and cultism activities in the state.
Briefing journalists shortly before the parade at the command’s headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, the state Commissioner of Police, Francis Mobolaji Odesanya said out of the 41 suspects, 22 were arrested for cultism, 15 for kidnapping while four were for armed robbery.
DSP Nnamdi Omoni, who briefed journalists on behalf of the Police Commissioner, disclosed that the Anti-Cultism Unit of the command acting on a tip off arrested one Promise Nweke, Bobo Prince, Highness Ogbuchi, Chile Owhor, Wisdom Weche, Glory Nnamdi and Promise Oligwe, who allegedly confessed to belonging to Deygbam secret cult and responsible for the various cult activities and killings around Rumuji/Emohua axis.
He said: “The Anti-Cultism Unit acting on a tip-off arrested Ibim Michael, Apuo West, Cotterell Adiebia, Tamuno Braide, Ugochukwu Obi, Trinity Gorge, Tonye Karibo and George Goodluck at Buguma. They confessed to belonging to Ice-Lander secret cult and have been terrorising the Buguma/Abonnema/Degema axis before their arrest.”
On armed robbery, Odesanya said the State Criminal Investigation Department arrested one Noble Blessing, Owakeme James and Progress Lazarus along Ahoada West in the state.
He added that the suspects, who allegedly confessed to crimes, also took the police team to Ubio forest where some weapons were recovered.
According to him, some of the weapons recovered include “one AK47 rifle with serial number 6313201D, magazine with one round of live ammunition, one cut to size English double barrel gun with serial number BUL14788, one locally made single barrel gun, one cut to size pistol like iron and one locally made barrel gun.”
