Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, and leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Chief Oluyemisi Samuel Falae, was on Monday kidnapped by suspected Fulani herdsmen in his farm, at Ilado village along Igbatoro in Akure North area of Ondo State.
Family sources said, Falae, aged 77, was abducted on a day he clocked a new age.
The octogenarian, who is the National Chairman of Social
Democratic Party, SDP, and a former presidential candidate, was attacked before he was whisked away by the herdsmen from his farm.
It was gathered that some workers in the farm were also attacked by the suspected herdsmen who shot sporadically into the air.
The Director of Administration and Publicity of SDP in Ondo state, Mr. Remi Olayiwola, who confirmed the incident
to journalists, said Chief Falae was kidnapped on his farm.
“It was confirmed that Baba went to his farm as usual in llado. The gunmen went to his farm, attacked and kidnapped him,” he explained.
He added that the abductors have demanded the sum of N100 million as ransom for his release.
“The abductors have contacted Chief Olu Falae’s wife and they are demanding the sum of a hundred million naira (100m) before they would release him”, he said.
Also, the State Chairman of SDP, Duyile confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, Ondo State government has condemned the abduction of the elder statesman in its totality. Speaking in a telephone interview with Nigerian Pilot on the incident, the
state Commissioner of Information, Mr Kayode Akinmade said that the state government is seriously disturbed by the incident .
He, however, stated that the state government has convened a meeting with relevant security agencies with the view to securing the immediate release of the former secretary to the
government of the federation from his abductors without any delay.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Wole Ogodo also confirmed the report to journalists in a phone interview. Ogodo however said it was not a case of kidnap but an attack from Fulani herdsmen.
He said the victim and his abductors had been having running battles on the farm land for some months back. The police image maker said the national chairman of SDP was taken away while some of his staff were seriously wounded.
The PPRO said no fewer than 50 policemen have been
deployed to the area to search for the former SGF.
