Acting National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, yesterday said the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states will make or mar the tenure of the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu.
Secondus made the declaration when he received the head of International Republican Institute, IRI, in his office at the party national secretariat, Abuja.
Secondus said the new INEC chairman must conduct credible elections in the two states by following all the electoral rules to make the outcome of the polls acceptable to all Nigerians.
He said PDP has confidence in the Nigerian constitution and the electoral rules and it is now left for the individuals in the electoral body to conduct credible polls.
“We said it clearly that INEC must follow its rules, provide level playing field to all parties. If the commission is playing outside its rule, we will draw the attention of Nigeria to it. We believe in Nigeria’s Constitution, we believe in INEC Act, but we want INEC to conduct free and fair election in Kogi and Bayelsa. We want an improvement on the conduct of the last general elections.”
On the on-going rebuilding of the PDP, Prince Secondus said that the decision to embark on biometric membership registration, shown that the era of few money bags controlling the party is over.
He urged members to pay their dues as the party leadership has decided to take PDP back to the people.
Secondus disclosed that the party will train staff in collaboration with IRI, warning staff members against the sale of document to outsiders.
Our intention is to make our primaries zero expensive, so that nobody will induce anybody. My agenda is to revolutionise the party so that the idea of money bag controlling the party will be eliminated.
“We want every member to participate in the party activities by paying their dues. Through this, we can eliminate the class syndrome and bring the party to the people. The party belongs to all and should not be in the hands of few money bags. The party must be returned to the people,” he said.
