The people of Kogi West senatorial district have lamented the deplorable state of the Obajana-Kabba-Egbe-Ilorin road describing the road as a major gateway to the people of the area.
Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, stated that the pitiable state of the road stemmed majorly from the constant movement of heavy-duty vehicles from the Dangote Cement factory in Obajana to various parts of the country.
The law maker pointed out that the Obajana-Kabba-Egbe-Ilorin road was very vital in Nigeria’s road network particularly as it links travelers from South West geo-political zone to the Federal Capital Territory, the Northern and Eastern part of the country adding that over use of the road by heavy-duty vehicles and haulage trailers that on daily basis move goods from the Dangote Cement factory in Obajana to other parts of the country.
According to him, “it is a complete eyesore that such a critical road reputed as strategic and economically advantageous to national development and growth, linking Africa’s largest cement factory (Dangote Cement) at Obajana, over the years, has become a death trap due to long years of neglect. He noted that there is too much pressure on the road adding that the indiscriminate parking of cement trucks, queuing to load cement at Obajana Cement Factory located around the area has added salt to injury as their activities made the deplorable road highly impassable.”
He lamented that economic activities in the communities lining the roads have also shut down as it has been taken over by hoodlums who preyed on innocent travelers thereby forcing many road users to ply the Ekiti-Kabba, alternate route, so as to avert accident and other road dangers.
Melaye therefore appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to make the reconstruction of the dilapidated Obajana-Kabba-Egbe-Ilorin road a priority to ameliorate the pains of other road users urging the management of the Dangote Cement factory to partner with the federal government in ensuring urgent repair of the road.
In a similar development, a community leader in Obajana Comrade Bamidele Adeyanju decried the nonchalant of the management of Dangote Cement to the bad state of the road in particular and the Obajana community in general. He stated that it is painful that after about nine years of operation by Dangote Cement in Obajana, the community is still languishing in poverty.
“Although the road, after years of economic losses, robbery, rape and the attendant cry for government attention, was awarded by the immediate past administration, the joys of residents of Okunland, the dominant ethnic group living in the area, who had thought reprieve had finally come, were cut short with the disappearance of the contractors handling the road project, since after the March/April general elections.”
He urged the President, as a proactive and responsive leader, to take urgent steps to put an end to the agony of road users along Ilorin-Egbe-Kabba-Obajana many of whom are not alive today to tell their woeful stories and experience on the death trap of a road.
