Leadership of the Kwara State House of Assembly, yesterday, called on the State Housing Corporation and the Town Planning and Development Authority to stop allocating land and approving building plans on waterways in order to forestall unnecessary loss of lives and valuable property.
Similarly, it directed that the residence of Alhaji Kamaru and other buildings on waterways at Irewolede Housing Estate in Ilorin be removed immediately to ensure free flow of water.
These were part of the resolutions reached by the House while considering the presentation of a report by its Committee on Land, Housing and Urban Development on a petition titled “Save Our Soul” written by Mallam Jimoh Alabi.
The Deputy Speaker, Elder Mathew Okedare, who presided over the sitting, said the directive became necessary to prevent flood related disaster in the state.
It equally urged the state government to reprimand the hierarchy of the housing corporation, so as to check indiscriminate construction on waterways in the estate.
The lawmakers also directed the State Housing Corporation to as a matter of urgency upgrade the Isale Ajanaku road and open Igbaja road in the estate with a befitting drainage system as captured in this year’s budget, so as to save the petitioner’s house from collapse and report the actions taken on the resolutions within the next one month to the House.
