The Kwara State Government has commended the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), Kwara State Chapter for the distribution of 5,000 hybrid cashew seedlings to farmers in the State.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Muritala Olarewaju gave the commendation in Ilorin during the flag-off of this year’s cashew planting season, organized by NCAN in collaboration with the Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Alhaji Olarewaju in his address noted that the initiative would place Kwara State on top among the leading Cashew producing States in the Country and Africa at large.

According to the Commissioner, the present administration is mindful of the need for the State to diversify its economy especially in the agricultural sector, with a view to augmenting the dwindling revenue from other sectors due to the effects of the novel Coronavirus pandemic.

He enjoined farmers especially the beneficiaries to take advantage of the opportunities embedded in the initiative to boost and increase cashew production in the State.

In his remarks, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Mr. Kowiy Cook Olododo assured stakeholders of government’s support in improving food security through even distribution of the State Government’s intervention programmes.

Also speaking, the State Chairman of NCAN, Mr. Muhammed Abdulateef disclosed that the programme is aimed at mitigating the impact of Covid-19 on members and improve cashew production in the State.

An Agricultural expert who also doubles as Deputy Director, Horticulture in the Ministry, Mall. Mohammed Kabir, while educating the farmers on the preparation and establishment of Cashew orchard, encouraged them to prepare their farmland and plant manually to avoid destruction of organic nutrients of the soil.
