Lagos State Government has appealed the judgment of a Lagos High Court which on October 23, 2015 declared the appointment of Caretaker Committees to manage the affairs of Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas as illegal.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, in a statement on Tuesday said the government, not satisfied with the verdict, filed a Notice of Appeal and motion for Stay of Execution of the judgment before the Appeal Court in Lagos.
The Appeal Court has adjourned hearing of the application for Stay of Execution to November 18, 2015.
It would be recalled that a state High Court sitting in Igbosere, on Friday, ordered an election in all the local government areas in the state within 30 days.
The National Conscience Party had filed a suit before the court challenging the legality of appointing caretaker committees to run the affairs of local governments.
In his decision, Justice Abdulfatal Lawal had called on the Lagos State government to immediately implement the court’s judgment by dismantling the “illegal structures” of local government caretaker committees.
