In its bid to reduce congestion on the road, the Lagos State Government has through the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, launched a campaign tagged “Smart Transportation for Lagos, STfL.
The campaign was launched by the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to coincide with the official launchof the BRT Extension from Mile 12 to Ikorodu, which would deploy 434 new BRT Buses for commuter operation.
Inrecognition of the need to improve the transport sector in Lagos state, Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) conceived an initiative for public enlightenment called “Smart Transport for Lagos”. The initiative seeks to encourage Lagosians to travel more Affordably, Efficiently, Safely and Sustainably.
Speaking on the campaign, Governor Ambode stated that Smart Transportation for Lagos will encourage commuters to travel smartly within Lagos State to ensure less traffic. LAMATA will be educating Lagosians in line with the three pillars of Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability on how to commute around Lagos smartly.
According to Director of Public Transport LAMATA, Engineer Olugbenga Dairo, “the Smart Transportation for Lagos is an initiative conceived by LAMATA to address the perennial issue of gridlock traffic on the ever-busy route in Lagos State”.
“The STL initiative is expected to become critical in addressing the challenges posed by an increasing number of mega cities in both developed and developing regions in maintaining safety, easy flow of traffic, efficiency and a friendly and sustainable urban environment,” he explained.
On his part, Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Dayo Moboreola, emphasized that it is the Strategic Transport Master Plan that will transform the Lagos transport sector beyond its current challenges. “The plan identifies possible transport infrastructure and services required to meet growing travel demand for Lagos State by 2032,” he stated.
The STfL promotes efficiency, time management while commuting, saving more time and money by individuals carefully planning their routes and avoiding traffic congestion. Commuters can embrace Smart Transportation in Lagos by carpooling; sharing a car with family members, neighbours or friends going to the same area/direction.
STfL also encourages commuters to embrace technology and digitalization through the use of online conference and video calls as a way of avoid long a unnecessary commute or several hours spent in traffic.
The initiative further encourages drivers to drive safely and conduct regular auto maintenance in order to achieve Smart Transportation for Lagos. Pedestrians are also encouraged to make use of pedestrian bridges and sidewalks.
In addition, LAMATA encourages non-motorized means of transportation as a healthy alternative with the Smart Transportation Lagos initiative.
