The people of Effium autonomous community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State were yesterday thrown into mourning and disarray, following the alleged murder of a blind woman in the area, Mrs Helen Anyigor, by son of her landlord, Emmanuel Ogbonna, for refusing to honour quit notice served her over her inability to pay her house rent.
The landlord, Mr Ogbonna issued quit notice to Mrs Anyigor popularly known as Mama Arinze and other tenants for their inability to pay their rents.
While others vacated, Anyigor refused to do so, a situation that angered the son of her landlord.
The accused was said to have severally warned her to leave their compound but the woman kept complaining of lack of money to clear her rents and pleaded to be given time to raise the money.
Emmanuel, who returned from Lagos, allegedly met the woman in her room with a wood and ordered her to come out of the room to enable him lock it.
Angered by the woman’s refusal, Emmanuel allegedly picked up a wood and hit Mrs Anyigor on the head and she sustained serious injury and collapsed.
Sympathisers who were attracted to the scene rushed the woman to a hospital in Abakaliki for medical attention, from where they were referred to a hospital in Enugu; but Anyigor died on the way to the Enugu hospital.
A former tenant in the compound said “we kept having problem with our landlord over house rent and it persisted that some of us have to vacate. But Helen did not leave and I don’t blame her because she is a poor woman; she has no source of income except begging for arms.
“Her son, Arinze, usually move her in different places, including outside the community just to make sure she gets something to eat.”
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP George Okafor confirmed the incident.
He disclosed that the culprit had been arrested by the police and that autopsy would be conducted on the deceased to ascertain the cause of her death.
