Following repeated robbery attacks on residents of Rumuigbo community in Rivers State, landlords and tenants in one of the affected areas have joined forces to curb the excesses of the men of the underworld, with a call on the government to address the security challenge of the area.
It would be recalled that a number of armed robbery attacks were recorded in Worlu and Rumuobasiolu areas of Rumuigbo in Port Harcourt, sometime in April, both in the mid-night and early in the morning, leaving behind several victims who lost valuable belongings, apart from rape and other injuries inflicted on them by the robbers.
Concerned by the developments, landlords and tenants within the community, under the aegis of Rumuobasiolu Security and Welfare Committee, have mapped out strategies, which include setting up of private security, mounting of iron gates at strategic locations in the community, among other approaches.
In a statement, issued on 29 May, 2015 and jointly signed by its chairman, A .Poroma and Secretary, Barrister A. Williams, the committee, is informing residents of the area about the planned action stated thus:”We write on the above subject and to intimate you with the ongoing incessant armed robbery and other social vice rocking our street, resulting to threat to lives and insecurity of our properties.”
The committee, therefore, appealed to the police and other security agencies for support by extending their patrol to streets within the area.
Also, the security and welfare committee called for cooperation among residents in other to overcome threats of robbers in the community.
