A lawmaker representing Akure South/Akure North federal constituency, Hon. Afe Olowookere has partnered with the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure to train 50 graduates from his constituency.
The lawmaker said the graduates would be trained on Animal husbandry and food crops farming.
Olowookere stated this at the weekend during the empowerment programme organised for the people of his constituency: Akure South and north Local Councils at his constituency office in Akure, the state capital.
The lawmaker said he opted to empower the selected people on their respective area of interest with comparative advantage that will make them not only to progress, but able to break off permanently the shackles of poverty.
According to him the content of the “Empowerment “ was different from the Conventional practice of giving out(Okada) Motorcycles to the people irrespective of their educational status or professional callings.
His words :”I consider it irrational and wicked to subject young University Graduates for example to Okada riding before making an ends meet when there are so many other dignifying engagement.
“ It is my covenant to ably represent and do resoundingly well for my constituents through the intervention /constituency projects’ platform provided us by the National Assembly as representatives of the people, who knows the spots where shoes pinch the masses.
“We have counselled and educated them on why they need to decide for themselves and through this efforts, we have gotten long list of people that have indicated interest in animal husbandry, food crop, farming, textile/fabric business, processing and packaging of food item, patient medicine business, palm kernel processing, drying cleaning business, barbing and car wash.
“These set of people will be given the necessary tools for them to take off after completion of their training. My mission is to raise self-employed/self-dependent people and employers of labour from among us as a strategic means of reducing or eliminating poverty in our society”.
Some of the items donated by the lawmaker to his constituency are ten cars, Fifty motorcycles, refrigerators, industrial sewing machines, and generators, worth over 35million naira.
The lawmaker added that he had also made arrangement to train people from his constituency who are interested in crafts and trades like Tailoring/Fashion Design, Welding and Fabrication, Tie and Dye, Soap Making, Foundry.
Olowookere, however, urged the youths to shun the act of being used as political thugs by politicians but stressed that they should only make themselves available for productive engagement for the betterment of the society.
