Niger State governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello on Wednesday said the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the last weekend’s local government election was a declaration of faith in the party as the vehicle to take the state to next levels of development.
He also said the overwhelming victory recorded by the party showed that the rejection of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2015 general election was not a fluke.
The governor who was reacting for the first time after the elections to 24 of the 25 local government councils in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Malam Jibrin Baba Ndace assured Nigerlites that the party will not fail them.
“The outcome of the last Saturday’s council election is the people’s declaration of faith in our party. APC is a vehicle to take the state to the next levels of development.
“By the results declared by the electoral body, the electorate in the state have boldly inscribed their endorsement on the party in the state and this has further affirmed the fact that the victory the party recorded during the 2015 general elections was not a fluke as the opposition claimed.
“If after 16 years of plundering the resources of the state and subjected the rural areas to total neglect, it will amount to taking the people of the state for a ride if opposition thinks of winning the just conducted local government election,” Gov. Bello stated.
The governor congratulated the elected council chairmen and councilors and charged them to see their victory as a call to serve and as an opportunity to further improve the lots of the grassroots.
“With this victory much is expected of our elected council chairmen and councilors. Your victory is a call to service. Local government being the closest to the people, you have the onerous task to improve the socio-economic status of our rural dwellers.
“Your election was an expression of trust of the people on our party as a veritable vehicle to salvaging the state and our councils from further drifting. We cannot afford to disappoint our people.
“So I implore you all to identify critical stakeholders in your councils, fashion out plans and programmes in consonance with our party manifesto to salvage our councils and improve the standard and condition of living of our rural dwellers,” the governor charged the elected council leaders.
Governor Bello commended the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NISEC) and security agents for the peaceful conduct of the election.
He also admonished the electorate for their orderly conduct during and after the polls.
The APC won all the 24 local government councils with only Suleja local government election postponed by the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission.
