With less than a month to the inauguration of Mr. Udom Emmanuel as the fourth governor of Akwa Ibom State, political appointment seekers have started to mount pressure on him for consideration.
Nigerian Pilot learnt that those seeking appointments as commissioners, special advisers and other political positions have continued to flood the Government House and Emmanuel’s private residence while others have turned homes of associates of Udom and Governor Godswill Akpabio to a Mecca of sort.
They are said to be giving the governor-elect the pressure of his life as they have not only deployed their godfathers and those with the ears of the governor-elect to speak on their behalf while others it was gathered have equally engaged the services of spiritualists and other means to ensure that they are considered in the new administration in whatever position.
The appointment seekers which also include serving members of the State Executive Council, SEC, and professionals from the state, many of whom are based in Lagos, it was further learnt, are armed with their performances during the just concluded elections and in their work places.
A source said that many of the serving commissioners are not leaving any stone unturned in a bid to be re-appointed or given chairmanship of boards and parastatals as they are said to show up at every event that the governor-elect would attend with the impression of identifying with him.
“They are not giving Udom a breathing space. They follow him to every function so that they would be seen and considered for appointment but the annoying thing is that even some commissioners who served in the outgoing State Executive Committee, SEC, are also lobbying to be reappointed.
“I wonder whether they think that they are the only ones that are eligible for such positions out of over four million Akwa Ibom people,” the source said.
The PDP leadership in the state is also under pressure to accommodate as many people as possible due to fears that they could join the All Progressives Congress, APC, who are bent on collecting power from the ruling party in the state.
The APC in the state has gathered more momentum since the election of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as President and this the PDP have become aware of and would do anything possible to forestall it.
But the hope of many of the serving appointees to get reappointed into the new administration looks bleak after Governor Akpabio, during the PDP governorship campaign in one of the local councils, advised Emmanuel not to reconsider appointing people who have served for more than six years in his government.
