The Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Yomi Awoniyi, has decried the infamous title the state capital is gradually assuming as the most ‘dump sites’ in the country.
Addressing the staff of the Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board over the weekend, the Deputy Governor charged them to be diligent in keeping the capital city clean and ensure that the ugly tag of the dirtiest state capital in the North is removed.
Awoniyi, who gave the charge while addressing some field staff of the board in his office on Friday, described the state as ‘dump sites’ and observed that the capital has the most collection of refuse dumps in the North.
He described as worrisome the heaps of refuse found everywhere in the state capital and blamed the staff responsible for evacuating the dump sites at designated places for not doing their job with the seriousness it deserved.
He, therefore, urged them to intensify efforts and rid the city capital of its dump sites that littered every where, and noted that the cleanliness of the state capital is now becoming a source of concern considering the ever rising refuse dumps that dot strategic areas of the city.
Awoniyi, who promised to reward those who perform their work efficiently, called for more dedication to duty from the personnel that are to evacuate waste bins.
The Deputy Governor disclosed that government will not hesitate to deal with any staff found wanting in the discharge of their duties, even as he warned against attitudes that are inimical to the attainment of government objectives.
While noting that the rules of the civil service frowns at closing before the stipulated time of schedule, and absenteeism from duty, he warned the staff to henceforth key into government’s plans so as not to be found wanting.
He said the present administration will supply all the necessary working tools that would enable those that were saddled with cleaning the state capital to discharge and perform their functions effectively.
Some of the Sanitation officers who spoke at the meeting commended the state government’s efforts so far, assuring the Deputy Governor of their readiness to key into government’s planned objectives.
