Police in Benue State yesterday arrested a man, identified as Raphael Agasi in Otukpo, for beheading his kinsman, Ajah Esim over alleged land dispute.
Agasi, a native of Utonkon town in Ado local government of the state, committed the crime on Monday in town.
They were said to have been on warpath for a long time over a piece of land in the area.
Sources said both men met in the farm yesterday morning and a fight ensued between them, after which Agasi overpowered the deceased and cut off his head.
Agasi was said to have buried Esim’s half body in a shallow grave inside the farm while he kept his head inside a bag but he was caught by some villagers and taken to Otukpo Police Area Command where he is currently facing interrogation.
The Area Commander in Otukpo, Samuel Drakoji told Nigerian Pilot on phone that he was in possession of the human head in his office and would take it to the morgue at the Otukpo General Hospital before the end of the day.
Although he said initial efforts to conduct postmortem on the body of the deceased failed owing to traditional beliefs, Drakoji said he sent his men to the bush where the incident took place to take proper stock of it.
When contacted, the state police spokesman, Austin Ezeani confirmed the incident but said the deceased is an indigene of Obi local government.
