A man identified as Mr. Alex Nwabu, has allegedly raped to death, a widow, 34 years and mother of four children, Mrs Ogodo Egede in Egwudunagu village of Amachi community in Abakaliki local government area of Ebonyi State.
Mr Nwabu who allegedly committed the act inside Mrs Egede’s house on Saturday night was said to have constantly harassed and abused the deceased sexually with a continuous threat to kill her if she ever disclosed it to anybody.
The widow who depended on menial jobs to carter for her children was seen with bruises all over her dead body inside her house.
A family source told Nigerian Pilot that when the suspect continued the act, the widow’s daughter, a 13 year old girl was forced by the suspect to leave the house for threatening to expose him on that fateful night.
“The girl ran to her grandparents in the night because Nwabu threatened to kill her. When she came back in the morning, she only met the lifeless body of her mother covered with a wrapper.
“The girl went and informed her grandfather that her mother is dead. Although she had told the grandfather the action of the suspect against her mother in the night”, the source added.
The suspect has been apprehended at his father’s compound where he allegedly hide himself, following the declaration of the suspect wanted as well as a manhunt that was conducted by the community
The suspect has since admitted that he committed the crime on interrogation by leaders of the community.
In an interview with Nigerian Pilot, Nwabu said; “Mrs. Ogodo owed me N1, 500 and when I visited her for the payment she refused. I actually asked her for sex and she also refused. I later used force on her and I did not know she will die because I did not want to kill her.
“But she struggled with me which annoyed me and I beat her up, I had sex with her several hours”, the suspect said.
Reacting, the widow’s father, Chief Ogbonna Ogayi said her granddaughter ran to her in the night and reported that Nwabu came to their house and started harassing her mother with a cutlass.
According to him, “I had told my daughter (the deceased) to leave the late husband’s home and come to my house so that I can be taking care of her and the children even though am having financial challenges and lots of responsibilities but she refused and insisted on remaining in her late husband’s home, ‘for better for worse’.
“She told me that her late husband has no immediate brother and relatives and that she will not like the lineage to go into extinction and therefore will remain there”, he said.
The deceased has been deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, FETHA 1 mortuary while the suspect is currently cooling off in the police net at the Central Police Station, CPS, Abakaliki.
