RECENTLY, Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON present Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme, MANCAP certificates to 31 manufacturers, our correspondent LINUS OOTA reports.

MANCAP was established in 2006 to ensure that all products manufactured in Nigeria meets with the requirements of the NIS product specification.
Speaking during the presentation of certificate to 31 manufacturers, Director-General, Standard Organization of Nigeria, SON Dr Joseph Odumodu gave 90 days ultimatum to all existing manufacturers of products within the market to comply with the terms and conditions for the issuance of MANCAP certificate or risk closure.
He explain that the new SON Act has made it mandatory that all new products must have MANCAP fast track approval before placement in the market adding that the arm is to entrench a culture of quality and continual improvement in the company’s products.
Dr Odumodu who stated this Tuesday in Abuja at the presentation of MANCAP certificates of conformity to successful to 31 successful manufacturers in the FCT by the FCT office of SON explain that the award is an indication that their products conforms to the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards.
“The new SON Act has made it mandatory that: any new product must have MANCAP fast track approval before placement in the market and therefore all existing manufactures of products within the market are hereby given ninety,90 days of grace to comply with the terms and conditions for issuance of MANCAP certificate or risk closure” he said
The DG who was represented by the Director legal services Umar Kawu said that the idea was initiated in 2006 to encourage all locally manufactured products to meet the requirements of the relevant Nigerian Industrial standard in order to protect the health, safety and environment of the citizens and engender business profitability and sustainability.
According to him, products that meets requirement shall then be issued with a MANCAP certificate of conformity and logo/unique number for use on the product before offering it for sale in the market “once certified, the manufacturer will be able to use and display the MANCAP certification Mark of Quality on the certified product”
“The certification mark shall be applied according to the regulations of SON, it is the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure that the certification mark is applied only to products that comply with the requirement, regular inspection and auditing is required for the manufacturers to retain their product ‘certified’ status”
Earlier in a welcome address, the Director operations, SON Engr Felix Nyado explain that the outcome of this activity ensures that goods place in the market are fit for use and guarantee value for money, enable efficient market operation and access, and protect health, safety and environment of the citizens.
“This programme has tremendous benefits to the manufacturers as it helps them win consumer confidence, increase market share, gain protection against unfair competition, avoid financial risk from claims and compensations among others.
“The previous awardees here present and especially the chairman of this occasion can attest to his company’s continuous growth, profitability and reputational image occasioned by the benefits received from the certification of his products to the MANCAP.
“It is in the pursuance of the above MANCAP objectives that the present management under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Odumodu has re-engineered the MANCAP programme to provide technical audit of product quality and process controls procedures with additional benefits of technical advisory services and information by the organisation at little or no cost that would otherwise be obtained at very high cost to manufacturers” said Engr Nyado.
Also speaking, executive chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council, Hon. Micah Jiba who was represented by the speaker of AMAC legislative council Hon Dantali Abu in his goodwill message explain that unwholesome and sub-standard product poses serious danger to the health of our people to a large extent, also affect the environment.
“The Job of being a regulator, a watch dog and supervision is enormous, SON alone cannot do it, therefore, I wish to urge Nigerians and other resident to report proven cases sabotage by any operator to law enforcement agencies, MDAs, traditional rulers of any relevant institution, it is time for proper synergy by all stakeholders to stamp-out illegalities in the manufacturing sector”
The Director-General, Consumer Protection Council, Mrs Dupe Atoki in her good will message at the occasion said that the certificate regime will also promote the export potential to our made in Nigeria products and in turn promote economic and industrial development.
She said that CPC being the apex government organisation mandated to promote the rights and interest of consumers is participating in the MANCAP certificate presentation programme because of its relevance in the promotion of consumer rights and interest “CPC is mandated among others to provide speedy redress to consumers complaints, organise and undertake campaigns and other forms of activities as will lead to increased public consumer awareness, seek ways and means of removing or eleiminating from the market hazardous products and causing offenders to replace such products with safer and more appropriate alternatives”
According to the DG, CPC “It is of note that the council collaborates with SON in the development and elaboration of various standards used in providing goods and services. I wish to state that the CPC supports the MANCAP certification as it reduces the burden of government in addressing unwholesome products and unethical practices, we hope that the recipients will continue to adhere to the standards that earned them this recognition in ensuring that products and services satisfy consumers with value for money”
Also speaking in a welcome address, the chairman/CEO Banruts Rolls Nigerian Ltd Prince Samson Ataiyero said that the process of attaining Nigeria industry standard is not as cumbersome as people may think, even though the process can be improved upon “MANCAP is particularly aimed at protecting genuine producers/manufactuers against those faking, counterfeiting and producing substandard products, MANCAP certification gives confidence to consumers of thatproducts, MANCAP ensure that product manufactured in Nigeria comply with Nigeria industry standard and if consumers are aware that a particular product has MANCAP certification, they can be sure that the products offer value for their hard earned money.”
According to him, “To us manufacturers, MANCAP certification increases the confidence of consumers in our products while also increases the efficiency of the processes that leads to the finished products, MANCAP also assist Nigerian manufacturers to participate and compete with bigger international firms operating in the market.
“To the awardees, I must say that it is not easy operating a business in the Nigerian economy especially as a manufacturer, but I have a ward of encouragement, adhere strictly to production of approved and certified products, then you can all be sure of acceptance by the consumers, again, getting this certification is not enough, you must ensure that your product conform to the approved guidelines at all times to avoid cancellation of certification by SON” he said
