masquradesThere was a violent clash of culture and religion in Akokoland, on Tuesday, when four masquerades armed with whips reportedly invaded a church and put the worshippers to flight.
It was learnt that the masquerades had arrived at a branch of the Christ Apostolic Church in Epinmin, Akoko and were stopped by two clergymen when the uninvited guests wanted to enter.
The mid-week service, however, took a turn for the worse and ended prematurely when the masquerades reportedly flogged the pastors and later barged their way into the church hall and descended on the worshipers with whips.
It was learnt that soon after the masquerades had sacked the church and put the worshipers to fight, they disappeared. The worshippers later emerged from their hiding and took the injured pastors to the hospitals for treatment.
The situation created panic among the worshippers of the said church who were seen discussing the unfortunate incident and wondering where the masquerades could have come from and why they should attack the worshippers in the church.
Nigerian Pilot Sunday also gathered that the matter was reported to the police in the area leading to the arrest of one of the masquerades.
The police gave the name of the arrested masquerade as Tunde Arohunmolase and added that efforts were on to arrest others.
Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Wole Ogodo, said the two clergymen were treated and later discharge from hospitals.
He said the pastors were the ones who came to report the case to the police and the police responded quickly and arrested one of the masquerades.
He gave the names of the victims as Pastor Jacob Ogunmola and Pastor Kehinde Ilori both of CAC Church, Epinmin Akoko.
Ogodo stated that the arrested masquerade is presently cooling his heels at the police custody and that he would be charged to court soon after the police conclude their investigation.
The police PRO, who described the incident as unfortunate warned villages and communities that parade masquerades to be mindful of their behaviour or be ready to face the full weight of the law.
