Mass defection is looming in Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ebonyi State chapter as some political bigwigs in the party are set to decamp from the party to All Progressives Congress, APC, Nigerian Pilot can authoritatively report.
For the meantime, a former Senator, Chief Azu Agboti has defected to the APC.
Agboti once represented Ebonyi South Senatorial zone in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
No reason was given by Senator Agboti for his defection, but reliable sources confirmed his unhappiness over how the new PDP administration of Governor David Umahi jettisoned his candidates for appointments.
In a letter to the State Chairman of the party, Joseph Onwe, the senator simply noted his resignation without giving any reason.
He said:”It is with sincerity of purpose that I hereby resign my membership of the PDP. My resignation takes effect immediately.”
Senator Agboti, who was the Director of Governor Dave Umahi’s Divine Mandate Campaign for Afikpo North LGA, left the party because he was disappointed with resent events in the party, according to a close source.
“He is not happy with the inability of the party to keep certain promises made to him before the election. His candidates for commissioner and other appointments were jettisoned. He was frozen out in the party since after the election hence his decision to move to APC which has promised to carry him along”, the source said.
Another source in APC revealed that many PDP bigwigs have indicated interest to join the party, especially among the disappointed party faithful as the governor makes more appointments into his government.
“Many stakeholders who were not appointed or their list of candidates turned down feel betrayed and are in talks with the APC to defect.
“Any moment from now they will officially make their decision open, many bigwigs are among them. Their defection is likely to shake the foundations of PDP in the state,” the source said.
