Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday urged Governor Rauf Aregbesola to immediately re-evaluate all policies and programmes he introduced in the education sector, if he intends to arrest the downward slide in WAEC rating.
The party disclosed this in a statement issued by Prince Diran Odeyemi, its spokesperson, and made available to newsmen in Osogbo, against the backdrop of Osun’s position in the recently released result of 2016 West Africa Examination Council, WAEC, which placed the state in 29th position.
Osun State, according to the 2016 WAEC passing rate published on the website of the organisation, placed 29th, thus emerging the least ranked state in Southern part of the country coming behind Kogi and Benue States.
Acknowledging Gov Aregbesola’s investment in education sector since coming on board, Odeyemi said all the efforts had come to naught with the massive failure recorded by most public school students’ in the state in this year’s WAEC result.
The statement reads: “structures are being erected and noise is reaching heaven because of this, is the 29th position among 36 plus FCT states a good advert for all the razzmatazz over learning tablet “opon imo” and other educational policies introduced by Aregbesola? Definitely no!
“To lend Aregbesola a helping hand, one of the hindrances we have noticed undermining his efforts is lack of motivation, none payment of salaries and entitlements of teachers among other equally serious challenges.
“This same administration outlawed corporal punishment in schools and did everything to demean teachers in the reckoning of citizens by calling them all sorts of names. The reality of what we have today in Osun’s schools, beyond the veil of deceit being used to cover the rot in public schools in Osun, is the state’s position on WAEC passing rate.
“In 2009 under PDP government, Osun ranked 9th in the WAEC passing rate and before we achieved that feat, a lot of efforts went into reviving education sector which we met in comatose due to mass retrenchment of teachers by Chief Bisi Akande led administration.
The PDP also advised parents and all stakeholders to show more concern about happenings in public schools in the state, assuring it would henceforth, as a responsible opposition party, take more than passing interest in actions and inactions of government particularly regarding the state’s education sector.
