As workers across the country gathered to mark the Workers Day celebration yesterday, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Kaduna State Branch, Chairman, Comrade Adamu Ango has blown the whistle over an alleged plans by the state government to retrench many local government workers in the state.
Comrade Ango who raised the alarm while observing the workers day celebration in the state, said many of the local government workers have been shortlisted for retrenchment due to flimsy excuses of irregular appointments from 2009 till date.
He said the state government should be magnanimous in rescinding this planned retrenchment as its implementation will put a lot of families in the state into turmoil as this will have serious negative effect on about 7,000 workers and thousands of dependents.
He stated that the move is totally unacceptable especially that it is coming when the labour is trying to grapple with the recent retirement of some permanent secretaries unceremoniously and making Hon Commissioners Accounting Officers.
Comrade Ango however noted that this decision is bound to erode the independence of the civil service as the commissioners themselves foremost are politicians, even if some of them are professionals in their own rights.
