Media is playing a critical role in our democracy – INEC

Prosecute electoral offenders before Kogi, Bayelsa polls, CSOs urge INEC

Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has stated that the media has been playing a critical
role in Nigeria’s democracy and hopes that it continues to play the role expected of it, so as to deepen
the country’s democracy.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu was represented by the National Commissioner,
Muhammed Kudu Haruna, at a joint forum organised by the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, and INEC

stated that though there had been areas of difference at one time or the other but the media still
remains a major stakeholder in our electioneering process.
“The commission and the media have had a very robust relationship though there have been occasion
where differences arose.”
He maintained that the commission is looking into the issue of violence, poor voter turnout and some
other challenges facing our electoral system.
In his remarks, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi stressed that the role of
the media as the fourth estate of the realm cannot be overemphasized, therefore, they should be
adequately equipped to carry out their duties diligently according to the ethics of the profession.
According to him, media practitioners’ welfare is very essential and should not be overlooked so that
they would not be compromised in the course of doing their job.
In the same vein, Oyekanmi urged conventional media practitioners to be wary of the content they pick
from social media to disseminate, as it has become the source of spreading fake and unverifiable news.
In her own summation, Mrs. Stella Jibrin, a Director with the Nigerian Press Council, NPC, commended
the commission for making adequate provision for People with Disability, PWD, to partake in the last
general elections and urged it to do more, as there is room for improvement.
