Media partners in Nigeria under the aegis of New Nigeria Conversation, NNC, yesterday in Abuja commended the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, for embarking on nationwide training of constituents to know their rights and how to demand them in order to hold their elected representatives and top government officials accountable.
In a press statement issued by NNC and made available to Nigerian Pilot, the group stated that ignorance and lack of public awareness among Nigerians had encouraged excesses of the political class.
“This initiative by the NHRC is a proactive measure which if fully maximised, can boost good governance, check bad governance, corruption, fiscal misappropriation, just as it will sting politicians making frivolous promises to their constituents as baits for votes during electioneering campaigns to sit up and see democracy and governance as a serious business.”
NNC noted with concern that budgetary provisions were often made for the implementation of constituency projects being advocated by lawmakers at the National Assembly and states Houses of Assembly, but allegations and counter allegations were rife that funds allocated to constituency projects were diverted into private pockets through contract awards to companies belonging to lawmakers or their cronies.
They commended the executive secretary of the NHRC, Professor Bem Angwe, for his foresight and consistent efforts in ensuring that every Nigerian knows his or her right and should be able to defend same.
NNC therefore urge that the NHRC to sustain the empowerment programme as it is not only reflective of the spirit of the present administration of President Muhammed Buhari but also key to the success of the ‘Change’ Agenda.
New Nigeria Conversation is a creation of media partnership with support from local and international media organisations.
The mission of NNC is to create platforms for open and vibrant discussions, interactions and information sharing among Nigerians to promote democracy, development, good governance and human right, as well as assess performances and impacts of government policies and programmes.
