Lionel Messi has challenged Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero to prove he’s not chicken in Argentina’s upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.
Aguero has been handed the unenviable task of filling both Messi’s boots and his No 10 shirt as the Barcelona man sits out through injury.
Argentina take on Ecuador and Paraguay this week and the City ace is under strict instructions from Messi to wear the iconic No 10 shirt.
‘I spoke to the kit man and he told me it’s obligatory, someone has to use it (the No 10 shirt) because the numbers go from 1 to 23,’ Aguero told La Nacion.
‘I wore it for the first time against Bosnia, in a friendly in the United States, and Leo (Messi) said: ‘When I am not around Kun (Aguero) has to use it.’
Then he started to send me messages like: ‘Are you going to wear it? You’re not going to chicken out?’
‘Now every time he is absent it is up to me to wear it. I am happy to pull on the shirt, but it obviously belongs to him.’
Aguero will be hoping to transfer his recent domestic form into the internationals having put five goals past Newcastle last weekend.
And the 27-year-old is confident his side can still compete despite star man Messi missing the fixtures through injury.
‘It is a bit strange because Leo has always been here with us, but these things happen in football, we have great players here and we can do well without him,’ Aguero added.
