European Union, EU has declared that illegal migration of Nigerian and other African nationals to Europe has claimed more lives than the Boko Haram terror group.
The EU deputy head of delegation to Nigeria, Richard Young made the declaration last Wednesday during a one day seminar the Union organized for members of the Abuja Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ.
According to Mr. Young, 283,582 illegal migrants arrived Europe in 2014, while in 2015, 1.8mmilion arrived the continent. “In the first quarter of 2016 alone, 174,394 arrived Europe and 2100 have died in the first quarter of the 2016. This is more than Boko Haram”, he declared.
Of the above mentioned figures, Young said the number of illegal Nigerian migrants in 2014 was put to 8700, while in 2015, 23,600 Nigerians arrived Europe illegally, and that in the first quarter of 2016, 3,400 arrived Europe.
In the meantime, EU said it will spend a whopping sum of 512million euro to assist Nigeria in areas of health, nutrition, resilience, as well as sustainable energy and access to electricity in the next five years, and that the amount will cover issues relating to rule of law, good governance and democracy in the country.
EU head of section, economic cooperation and energy, Juan Casla while delivering a paper on the EU-Nigeria development cooperation said the project covers from 2014 to 2020 and it is a continuation of the earlier project of 2008 to 2013, of which 677million euro was expended on peace and security, governance and human rights, as well as regional integration. “These are grants not loan, and this makes EU the largest aid provider with more than half of all official global aid’, he declared.
Earlier, the EU deputy head of delegation, Richard Young educated the journalists on the working of the Union stating that the organization is a unique one with three basic structures namely the council, commission and parliament.
He said EU is Nigeria’s biggest partner and a largest humanitarian donor in the world with 28 member European countries.
