Efforts to resolve the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, suffered a major setback yesterday as the inauguration of reconciliation committee was aborted over failure of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff to secure venue for the inauguration.
As part of efforts to resolve the crisis, there was an agreement by the party leaders to constitute a 28-man reconciliation committee.
The National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi was to nominate 14 members of the committee while the party’s former national chairman, Senator Sheriff’s group was to nominate the 14 members of the committee.
It was gathered yesterday that in the build-up to the inauguration date, Sheriff had rejected the choice of PDP temporary secretariat, She Musa Yar’Adua Centre, and another highbrow hotel in Abuja as venue for the inauguration.
He was said to have insisted the venue must be Transcorp Hilton and also turned down offer by the PDP National Caretaker Committee to pay for the venue.
However, indication that the inauguration of the reconciliation committee may not hold emerged yesterday afternoon when the PDP leaders, national secretariat workers, some state chapter chairmen and journalists arrived for the inauguration on to discover that meeting room was not displayed on Transcorp Hilton events notice board.
The PDP staff made several enquiries from the hotel staff about the venue that was booked for the meeting without getting any positive response.
The workers resorted to checking the various meeting rooms, including the Congress Hall, just to ensure there was no mix-up on the part of Transcorp Hilton staff.
This went on for almost one hour and in the interim, no known member of the Modu Sheriff-led group was noticed in the hotel.
The confusion was laid to rest when one of the journalists that came for the inauguration put a call to Hon Inuwa Bwala, the media aide of Modu Sheriff, to ascertain why nobody from their group was at the venue.
Bwala said the inauguration would not hold as earlier scheduled as they (Modu Sheriff group) were still studying the terms of reference of the reconciliation committee.
The news that the inauguration of the reconciliation committee would not hold as scheduled did not go down well with PDP leaders that came from outside Abuja.
Indications that Modu Sheriff did not notify the National Caretaker Committee of his decision to shun the inauguration came from the national publicity secretary, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, who expressed shock in a telephone interview over the development.
Prince Adayeye said he was not at the venue because he travelled to the South West for official engagements.
