A 92-year-old cancer survivor has made history by becoming the oldest woman to finish a marathon.
Harriette Thompson of Charlotte, North Carolina crossed the finish line of San Diego’s Rock’n’roll Marathon in seven hours, 24 minutes and 36 minutes on Sunday.
Incredibly, it was her 16th time competing in the gruelling 42km event. This year she broke the age record set by Gladys Burrill, who was 92 years and 19 days old when she ran the Honolulu Marathon in 2010.
Thompson, who is 92 years and 65 days old, has raised more than $A100,000 dollars for cancer research.
Her husband, Sydnor, died of cancer in January while Thompson herself is recovering radiation treatments for skin cancer on her legs.
“It’s always hard but this year has been a bad year for me,” Thompson said after the race, adding she was unsure if she would run again next year.
“I was just really thrilled that I could finish today.”
