Jose Mourinho has been blasted by a leading sports physician over his criticism of Eva Carneiro.
Chelsea’s first-team doctor has been ruthlessly axed after appearing to undermine manager Mourinho on social media.
The 41-year-old – along with first-team physio Jon Fearn – will not appear on the bench for Sunday’s game at Manchester City, and is unlikely to return to it.
Carneiro and Fearn were both publicly blasted by the Chelsea boss after Saturday’s draw with Swansea for entering the pitch late in the game to treat injured Eden Hazard.
Mourinho accused the duo of being “naive”, but former head of sports medicine and sports science at Liverpool Peter Brukner has slammed the Blues boss.
“I thought it was appalling behaviour by the manager,” Brukner told talkSPORT.
“The medical staff deserve a public apology, and I’m very disappointed the club hasn’t come out and done something to support them – they were just doing their job.”
Although Carneiro will keep her role as team doctor, she will no longer be at training sessions, travel with the squad to games or even enter the team hotel on matchdays.
It’s understood the decision, which has left the Chelsea players stunned, has been taken jointly by Mourinho and the champions’ hierarchy.
“Our first priority as doctors and physio is the health and safety of the individual player, and that’s what they were attending to,” added Brukner, who is currently doctor for the Australia national cricket team.
“They were doing their job and they’ve been criticised very publicly.
“He [Mourinho] has a player [Hazard] who has gone down, has remained down and the referee considered it serious enough to summon the doctor and physio. They went on as they must do, and as a result the player had to come off the field.
“What do you expect the doctor to do, just ignore the referee beckoning them on?
“They were only responding to the referee’s instruction to come and a treat the player, so to criticise the medical staff publicly in the way that he did was absolutely appalling behaviour.”
