Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said Nigeria needs an alternative political party that would address the needs of the masses.
This was disclosed at a state of the nation address by the national executive council of the union held at the Paschal Bafyau Labour House in Abuja yesterday.
President of ASUU, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge said understanding the character of the state or an appreciation of the social forces and political influences that shape the state was crucial for designing and implementing an effective development strategy.
“Social forces in the state have interests which are invariably in conflict, and they promote and defend those interests with a set of values and belief system, sometimes, described as ideologies.
“Some of these ideologies are explicitly stated, while others are implicit. Sometimes, those who have implicit ideologies claim to have no ideologies at all,” he stated.
He accused the ruling class of running ideologies that are based on private property, the rule of the propertied and privileged classes and condemned their holding tenaciously to the ideology of oppressing the masses and the property-less.
“Denial of ideology is a futile attempt to mask the class character of the Nigerian economy, politics and political parties. Also any Nigerian who espouses the economic propaganda of the Bretton Wood Institution is an ideologist,” Fagge argued.
ASUU noted that ideology was usually embedded in all economic and political choices, which he said involved standards of just distribution of wealth and queried whose interest the existing economic arrangement serves.
“What kind of state is required to protect the interests of the existing economic arrangement and which group controls that state?” the union queried.
Incidentally, this position of the ASUU is directly corroborating insinuations in some quarters that some political parties are planning to take advantage of the widening crack in the past and present ruling parties to float a new political party that would rub shoulders with the so-called ‘Big Two.’
Other ASUU big stalwarts present at the press conference included former ASUU presidents, Dr Dipo Fashina and Dr Asisi Asobie, among others.
