heavy downpour-induced mudslide yesterday killed a newly wedded woman when their shanty abode collapsed in Agidingbi area of Lagos.
Nigerian Pilot reports that the 16-year-old Faisa Mohammed who just got married 10 days ago lived with her husband and mother on a swampy location on Kuata area, by Amara Olu Street, Mechanic Village, Agidingbi in Ikeja.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, South-West spokesman, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, three persons were discovered trapped under the mud which was caused by heavy downpour witnessed in Lagos.
In a report by the general manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Michael Akindele, he said that the agency received a distress call through
the emergency toll free line 112/767 at about 10.54a.m.
He said that the report was on mudslide on illegal shanties involving three persons trapped under the mud.
Akindele said that the agency’s Emergency Response Team, ERT, was able to rescue two people (a male and a female) while one adult female lost her life and the body was recovered.
He said the area was a wetland and a buffer zone, which was not habitable, adding that the state government had been sensitising people staying in flood-prone areas and wetlands to vacate such areas to avert loss of lives, especially during this rainy season.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Samuel Babatunde Adejare who visited the scene of the incident have asked the squatters to leave the area as their shanty structures would be demolished soon.
