Abubakar Mustapha, a leading candidate for the position of national secretary at the PDP National Convention, has appealed to delegates to unanimously endorse his candidature to enable him quickly commence the process of giving the party back to the people.
He said that the power to decide, define and dictate the destiny of the party belonged to the people.
This pledge was given yesterday in Port Harcourt by Alhaji Rabiu Bako, the director general of Abubakar Mustapha Campaign Organisation, while briefing reporters shortly after his team arrived the Rivers State capital early Monday and went straight to attend what he described as a very successful and historic screening by the electoral panel for the convention.
The DG said that as democrats and proud members of the PDP, Monday’s screening represented the beginning of the dawn of a new era for the party, where the people, as owners and stakeholders in the party, had commenced the process of truly owning the party and also determine its destiny.
“As former national organising secretary, Abubakar Mustapha worked tirelessly and courageously to build bridges in the party while putting the core interests of party members above all considerations. His belief and conviction that the people’s interest must come first resonated across the party nationwide. His excellent past conduct was anchored on it. This is the fulcrum of his aspiration to the higher position of national secretary, which eminently places him above the few others angling for the office.
“He believes, and rightly so, that time has come to give the party back to the people where it rightly belongs especially after it has been discovered that PDP’s fortunes started to drop immediately after it started to disconnect from the people against the ideals of its founding fathers. The people must own the party to guarantee their complete accessibility. We must reconnect the disconnect. This is the only option,” Bako said.
He noted that since the political space in the country had continued to expand and with the people’s democratic choices becoming more defined and determined by their political sophistication, the PDP should have a humble, God-fearing gentleman, an astute administrator and a highly experienced civil servant such as Mustapha who was Kaduna State’s former Head of Civil Service for almost 12 years as its next National Secretary.
Restating his appeal to party members and stakeholders across the country to put into consideration Abubakar Mustapha’s training, pedigree and brilliant service record, Bako pointed out such a tested and trusted administrator and highly resourceful officer is difficult to come by.
According to him, Mustapha also has several awards in his kitty such as the presidential honours award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, MFR, adding that as a distinguished member of the National Institute (mni), he is most-suited now to adequately man the secretariat of the PDP that is being rebranded and repositioned as a government-in-waiting come 2019.
“We therefore urge all delegates and fellow party members to join the National Caretaker Committee to use the historic unique opportunity of this 2016 National Convention to finally bury the ghosts of impunity and imposition in our party in order to set the necessary stage to re-launch and re-enact PDP as a truly people’s party where it is power to the people,” he said.
