Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki has described his re-election as triumph over godfatherism.

While reacting to his victory, Obaseki commended the people of the state, saying “words fail me in saluting our teeming supporters who displayed immense courage in the face of threats, intimidation and brutalisation.

“The collective will of Edo people made it possible for this triumph over godfatherism. Congratulations to Edo people.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday declared Obaseki as winner of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

Making the announcement, Prof Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, INEC’s returning officer, said All Progressives Congress polled 223,619 votes while Peoples Democratic Party got 307,955 votes.

Meanwhile, the former national chairman of APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has said that the outcome of the election should serve as a big lesson to the political leaders and political parties not to take the electorate and the people for granted.

While expressing satisfaction that the people of Edo have finally overcome the two years torturous situation, he however attributed the peaceful outcome to the election to the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari, Oba of Benin among many other leaders.

He also noted that the outcome of the election can be compared to the concession by former President Jonathan to the outcome of the 2015 Presidential election, stressing that he has no remorse over his actions and inactions in the build-up to the poll.
