Kwara State chapter of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, has raised alarm over alleged attempt by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state at working against its proposed N20 billion bond.
The party added that “Kwara PDP is inciting Kwarans against the government over the bond” stressing the party was “reliably informed by impeccable insider sources that the leadership of the PDP in Kwara State has perfected moves to incite Kwarans with lies and half-truths on the proposed N20billion bond.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, the Kwara APC said: “Among other evil plans, the PDP has contracted a notorious printing press along Opomalu area, Ilorin, to massively produce handbills and leaflets containing the concoction of lies for massive distribution across Kwara state.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Kwara APC reiterates the fact that it is not opposed to constructive dissenting views either on the proposed bond or any other issues whatsoever. However, we condemn any attempt at misleading Kwarans through unwholesome propaganda and misleading information in the name of opposition politics.”
The party Spokesperson however maintained that, “considering the PDP reputation for mischief making and violence, we felt obliged to raise this alarm with a view to disabusing the minds of the few impressionable Kwarans who may be swayed by the PDP’s impending propaganda. For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to maintain earlier position that the bond is being floated only to engender improved welfare for teeming Kwara masses.
“Among others, the Kwara Government plans to use the proceeds of the bond to build critical infrastructure like roads, hospitals, schools and industry. Anything short of this is only a product of the imagination of the opposition elements. As a party, we have at several fora committed ourselves to transparency and accountability. And this is why we have pledged to monitor the disbursement of every penny of the bond to ensure that the funds are utilized only on projects which have direct impact on the poor masses. We therefore urge Kwarans to disregard the antics of the PDP.
“We also urge the PDP itself to desist forthwith from its planned action which can only overheat the polity and set the people against the good intention of the Kwara Government. But if the PDP fails or refuses to heed this advice, we will not hesitate to encourage the government to use the long arm of the law to forestall any untoward actions that seek to incite the people against the government.”
In his reaction on telephone, the PDP chairman in the state, Chief Iyiola Akogun, said “the APC was only proving jittery and working out of line. It is just a mere allegation and speculation. If they have any evidence to that effect, let them bring it out. “Also, if any of our moves are in any way criminal, let them take us to court. The court of law is there for everyone to access. Our own position will never change; what is even their business if we are working against them? All we want is financial and economic freedom for our people.”
