Trial of a former manager with the Nigerian Bottling Company, NBC, bottler of Coca cola beverages, Mr. Olubusoye Abayomi Adedeji, who is charged before a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting at Ebute-Metta, Lagos, has been adjourned till September 9.
The adjournment was sequel to the absence of the star witness, who was to testify in the matter when it came up on Monday.
Abayomi is facing charges bordering on alleged stealing of the sum of N68, 703, 480 million from the company’s coffer.
When the matter was mentioned on Monday, the prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odigie, urged the court for an adjournment to enable him get in touch with the prosecution’s star witness.
Consequently, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs. O. A. Adelaja, adjourned the trial of the matter till Wednesday, September 9.
The accused, who is in his 40s, was arraigned before the court by men of the Department of Criminal Investigation, Panti-Yaba of the Lagos State Police Command on a two count-charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The offences, according to the prosecutor, are punishable under sections 409 and 285(7) of the criminal laws of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2011.
The accused, a former Plant/Logistics Manager of Nigeria Bottling Company with others now at large, according to the police, was alleged to have committed the alleged financial act between June 2011 and June 2014, while acting as the manager in the two capacities.
A police source stated that the act was revealed after a forensic audit was conducted on the company’s account. And that, following the startling revelation of fraud, the police source said, the accused was handed over to the police by the beverages company’s management for prosecution.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges upon his arraignment in April, and consequently admitted to bail in the sum of N2million with one surety in the same sum by the presiding Chief Magistrate.
