Respite has come the way of contractors handling over six thousand projects for the Nigeria Police as the force has commenced partial payment of the over N7.4billion debts incurred over the years by the Police Works Department.
The huge debt led to the abandonment of the projects located in the States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
Chairman, Board of Trustees, BOT of the Association of Contractors for the Nigeria Police Force, ACFNPF, Chief Patrick Ojo disclosed the partial payment to contractors to news men in Abuja shortly after the emergency meeting of the Association
Chief Ojo who commended the Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon Aranse for approving the part payment for the contractors assured that all members would return to sites immediately but pleaded with the IGP to sustain the memento of the payments in order to ensure speedy completion of the projects
According to Chief Ojo, “most of the projects which are either completed or ongoing include renovation and construction of Police barracks, Training Schools, renovation and construction of Police Stations, procurement of kits, Vehicles and supplies among others”.
“We thank the IGP and his management team for keying into the change agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari with the commencement of the part payment of the over N7 billion which was stopped since 2009 due to what the then IGP M D Abubakar described as lack of funds”.
“Most of us took loan facilities from commercial banks to execute the projects but no payment was forthcoming to offset such loans, we have to sell our properties to redeem the debts and in the process, several of our members died while some suddenly took ill, some of us who are still surviving are living from hand to mouth, we pray not to experience this kind of hardship in life again,” he lamented
It was gathered that following the assurances received from the Contractors of returning to site and commence works immediately, the Nigeria Police Force has commenced the recruitment process of the 10,000 new personnel ordered last year by President Buhari on assumption of office.
Following this development, all the contractors, under the umbrella of the Association of Contractors for the Nigeria Police Force are said to have resolved to return to sites for the speedy completion of the projects
