As part of its mandate to rid the country of counterfeit and unwholesome products, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has destroyed fake and adulterated herbal products worth over N5 million in Enugu State.
Manufacturer of the fake and adulterated herbal product, one Mr. Ugwuoti Aloysius, was arrested by the police.
Enugu State Coordinator of the agency, Ikechukwu Okoye, who led a team that carried out the destruction exercise, yesterday, told journalists that the destruction was aimed at preventing and discouraging counterfeiters from venturing into the production of unwholesome and fake products.
According to him, the suspect operated an illegal factory behind the Central Bank of Nigeria, Enugu Branch, along Okpara Avenue.
Okoye said even if the herbal product is genuine, the environment where it is being produced, under a tree with a toilet beside it, has already made it unfit for consumption.
The manufacturer is said to be in the habit of counterfeiting other products other than his own drug.
